L’étoile Café.

This homely cafe lets you want to linger around, sip some coffee, read a book, or play catch-up with long-lost friends. Food was rather average in my opinion, but, here, it’s the ambience that counts.

Half a Yellow Sun | Salad Stop!

A wholesome bowl of Tuna San at Salad Stop!

Half a Yellow Sun.

We’ve all seen photos of starving children in Africa. Dark skinned, with stick-thin limbs and the iconic bulging bellies. It’s called kwashiorkor, caused by severe malnutrition particularly in protein. Only after reading this novel did I realize how little has been told of the story behind these starving children.

Based in the 1960s, about the events leading up to the Nigerian Civil War and the indignation of the Igbo people in face of war and massacre, Half a Yellow Sun reveals dark and ugly truth that was suppressed and distorted by western rulers at that time.

The novel relates of how intertwined lives struggle for their hopes, ideals and the most basic need of survival. Each time I read about such stories, I reminds me of what being a human means fundamentally, and that we’re all fortunate to be alive and safe.

Feels like home.

My mum used to bake a lot when I was younger. I love the smell of homemade cookies filling up the house. The first tray’s usually slightly charred but we would polish them off anyway. And we could empty a jar of cookies in a matter of days, until the oven ticks again.

This tiny bakery at Shaw Towers is as homely as it can get, from jars of cookies and plaid tablecloth to photo frames on the wall. Lady boss is very friendly too, offering whole cookies for tasting. I personally love the double chocolate, and oatmeal raisin cookies. I hear they serve moist fluffy muffins too!

Listen carefully amidst the weekend buzz and you’d hear japanese oldies ringing through the air. This is an unassuming japanese bakery with genuine service and a loyal following. And there’s little wonder why.

ILT, served with two bags of tea.

Chocolate banana bun. Soft bun with real banana fillings. Comfort food without the price tag. (:
