Necessary Provisions

Despite being located in the wild wild west, Necessary Provisions was brimming with customers when we arrived. By a stroke of luck, we found seats in a jiffy and were soon digging in to freshly baked savoury scones — our favourite since Henry Congressional’s. We loved their Pandan Chiffon Cake and Banana Nutella Panini too, although they were regrettably non-photogenic.

Carpenter and Cook

When I saw photos of Carpenter and Cook online, no amount of oohs and ahhs could express my excitement. If you’d fancy a dash of freshly baked goods tossed about in troves of vintage furniture, then this cafe is for you.

We tried several bakes, including the chocolate tart, lemon drizzle loaf, scones and savory muffin. But my favorite of them all is the passionfruit meringue tart. Sweet and tangy with a light texture, the tart is easy on the tummy and delightful on the palate.

We fell in love with their vintage homewares, and have solemnly sworn to scour the thrift stores and flea markets for some of our own. On that note, when’s our Australia road-trip gonna happen?

A little off the trail for the car-less ones, but C&C is definitely worth a short hide-and-seek.

Baker & Cook

Baker & Cook has been on my list for the longest time, because we both love freshly baked artisan breads and the rustic, homely atmosphere seems perfect for a weekend brunch.

Thanks to my non-existent sense of direction, we almost got lost while hunting it down, but were fortunately saved by a passing taxi. Don’t worry, it may be a lil out of the way, but it’s not that hard to find, really.

We shared an Eggs Benedict with a generous serving of smoked salmon — eggs were perfectly done — and it was absolutely delish!

Toasted Raisin Bagel, served with cream cheese.

The Double Chocolate Muffin drizzled with caramel was sinfully rich and moist too.

On the other hand, the coffee was served too hot and bland, so when I’m back again I’d opt for their teas.

P.S.: Can you tell I’m struggling to find my PS mojo? I sure hope it comes home real soon. Either that or I’d fly to chicago and learn from bri the queen..!!!

Cupcake Engineer.

I’ve a personal distaste for sugar-loaded fondant cakes pumped with artificial colorings. Pretty as may be, they’re certainly not half as delightful on the palate.

This tiny storefront at Cluny Court was, as its name suggests, founded by an engineer. He prepares his own meringue buttercream to make sure it’s not overly sweet to suit adult taste. Cupcakes are decent, but may need slight tweaking in texture.
