Kuala Lumpur: The Kitchen Table Bakery and Restaurant

Thursday Travels is a weekly column featuring sights and sounds from my wanderlust adventures. Come, fly with me, and we’ll explore strange cultures, exotic eats and everything in-between.

As the rest of us were hovering indecisively over the selection of cakes, a lone wanderer spotted a parfait sitting on the kitchen counter. She asked what it was, and if she could order one. Sorry, it’s not in the menu – it’s part of the staff meal. Moments later, a female staff appeared, and said we could have the parfait, it’s on the house.

It’s tough pinpointing what I loved most: the warm and friendly staff, the minimalistic kinfolk-ish interior or their ethereal bakes which vanished as soon as they arrived. No wonder some of my fondest memories of KL were formed in this homey cafe far away from city centre.

Tomi Sushi

I’m officially two steps away from the big three, but none the wiser. We had a quiet birthday celebration at Tomi Sushi, Katong V. I muttered a short eulogy for the passing of another year before morphing into a mega sushi monster. Now every little blessing – like getting ’em socks to dry in time for work – seems to be a good excuse for an encore celebration.

Tomi Sushi
30 East Coast Road #02-14/15/16, Katong V, S(428751)
Open daily 1130am – 230pm, 530pm – 1030pm

Artistry

Artistry is perhaps one of the most underrated cafes around. I’m a huge fan of their blueberries, ricotta and bacon pancakes, peanut butter and jelly french toast, and truffle fries. That sea salt chocolate fudge cake is deliciously rich and moist too. Do note that the pancakes are only available on weekdays before 12pm and after 2pm.

Open Tue-Sun: 10am-7pm

The U Factory

The U Factory will be stationed at Gillman Barracks from now until 26 Jan, featuring works from local designers and a Monocle pop-up store. Psst, it carries magazines like Cereal and The Travel Almanac at non-inflated prices!

Great Ocean Road: Geelong

Thursday Travels is a weekly column featuring sights and sounds from my wanderlust adventures. Come, fly with me, and we’ll explore strange cultures, exotic eats and everything in-between.

Thus began our Great Ocean Road Trip. The first stop, Geelong. Here, we paused for fish & chips under the supervision of gawking seagulls. And danced bolly-bolly around tall, brightly painted bollards.
