We popped in for one last cup of coffee just before our flight back. And here’s some sound advice: when at VCR, be sure to try their coffee, the King Cake and a bottle of The Tapping Tapir’s natural sodas — although chances are, you’ll end up ordering everything like what we did.

Kuala Lumpur: Pulp by Papa Palheta

After spending two insufferable days in KL without a sip of good coffee, I went berserk, and dragged two companions out into the middle of nowhere for a cup of joe that’s stamped with a Singaporean seal of approval.

More than once did they ask, “Are you sure we’re headed in the right direction?” Their questions weren’t without reason, considering the industrial factories around us. But still, I pressed on, following the sweet waft of brewed coffee. Fast-forward two cups of coffee and I’m at peace with the world again.

Kuala Lumpur: The Kitchen Table Bakery and Restaurant

Thursday Travels is a weekly column featuring sights and sounds from my wanderlust adventures. Come, fly with me, and we’ll explore strange cultures, exotic eats and everything in-between.

As the rest of us were hovering indecisively over the selection of cakes, a lone wanderer spotted a parfait sitting on the kitchen counter. She asked what it was, and if she could order one. Sorry, it’s not in the menu – it’s part of the staff meal. Moments later, a female staff appeared, and said we could have the parfait, it’s on the house.

It’s tough pinpointing what I loved most: the warm and friendly staff, the minimalistic kinfolk-ish interior or their ethereal bakes which vanished as soon as they arrived. No wonder some of my fondest memories of KL were formed in this homey cafe far away from city centre.

Meomi Cat Cafe

All cat cafes have this magical power that relegates intelligent ten-fingered human beings to defenseless cat slaves, cooing submissively at our feline masters and being bowled over with each split-second display of cuteness. Evidently, the stars have aligned and our future is clear: cats will take over the world one day.

Shrove Tuesday

Lately, my motivation to blog hovers stubbornly around the zero percentage point. Why, you may wonder, since I hardly write much anyway. Well, that only means one thing: I desperately need something fresh and exciting to liven up my life.

New cafes continue to pop up all over the island, but they no longer excite me like they used to. That said, the durian ice cream at Shrove Tuesday is praiseworthy and any place with good ice cream is a happy place.
